Postcode 5600 is essentially Whyalla and Whyalla Playford in South Australia, a regional industrial city on the western shore of Spencer Gulf, about 390 km north-west of Adelaide. It offers a relatively affordable coastal lifestyle, with established housing, supermarkets, schools, health services and regional employment, while the gulf provides fishing, boating and beach recreation; the city also has attractions such as the Whyalla Jetty and Ada Ryan Gardens. Whyalla Jetty Ada Ryan Gardens Housing costs are considerably lower than metropolitan Australia, although the local economy has historically been strongly influenced by steelmaking and manufacturing, so employment opportunities are more specialised than in Adelaide. The climate is dry, sunny and hot in summer, with mild winters, and the surrounding Eyre Peninsula gives it a genuine regional/outback character. For the SENA project, 5600 is particularly interesting: it is sufficiently remote from Adelaide to demonstrate the value of distributed digital infrastructure, yet it already has a substantial industrial base, workforce and community—making it a plausible location where renewable energy, satellite connectivity, edge computing and locally hosted digital services could complement rather than replace the existing economy.
