Badtjala Region

Postcode 4817 is a substantial and diverse part of Townsville’s western/north-western region, encompassing Kirwan, Bohle Plains, Thuringowa Central, Alice River, Rangewood and Hervey Range, with about 30,800 people across a large 740 km² area. In The Suburbs It offers a mixture of established suburban living and more spacious semi-rural living: Kirwan and Thuringowa Central provide schools, shopping and everyday services close to Townsville, while Alice River, Rangewood and particularly Hervey Range offer larger properties, more vegetation and a stronger rural/outdoor lifestyle. Kirwan is the largest community and is about 10 km from Townsville CBD, making 4817 quite different from a genuinely remote postcode while still providing access to the North Queensland lifestyle. In The Suburbs The area is relatively young and family-oriented, with detached houses dominating the housing stock. CensusAtlas For the SENA project, 4817 is especially interesting because it provides a potential bridge between a sizeable regional urban population and surrounding semi-rural communities—exactly the sort of distributed regional environment where edge nodes, renewable energy, satellite connectivity and locally delivered digital services could connect communities without requiring everything to be concentrated in a capital city.
